here are other methods of removing Windows, if BCA fails, without a nuke-and-pave. If I never have to do a sudo diskutil resetfusion again I think I could die a happy man.

The 2012 3TB-Fusion drive Mac is the exception. There was an evolutionary inflection point where Fusion Drives - at least the 3 TB variant - couldn't be upgraded between OS releases without reformatting them. This is the same as Snow Leopard, without Recovery HD. CoreStorage had a partition in pre-Mojave for Recovery, which is now a volume in APFS. This of course blows away all your data so make sure you're backup up twice before attempting this maneuver. There you can select the device and do an erase to blow away all the containers and volumes underneath. I tried a zillion things to remove the Boot Camp physical partition (with the ultimate objective to remerge it into the primary APFS container) but nothing worked - ended up calling Apple after going down a false path with level 1 finally got to level 2 who ultimately showed me how - with the Disk Utility GUI! - to reformat the SSD into a single chunk and reinstalled the OS and used migration assistant to get the disk back to snuff.įor those interested in reformatting the entire SSD there's a view menu in the upper left corner of Disk Utility (which I had never noticed) which allows in the "Show All Devices" view the storage hierarchy of Device/Container/Volume. This thing though is a positive beast - things that would an hour due (probably due to disk latency) get done in a quarter the time transcodes seem to take half the time (maybe less). Both had core-i7 4 core 8 thread processors, and 3 TB Fusion Drives and there was an improvement but it wasn't terribly dramatic. They were both top-of-the-line machines, but to be honest the 2017 wasn't that big an improvement over the 2014. My primary before this was a 2017 iMac 5K which was purchased in desperation in late 2018 when my 2014 5K was going into the shop and the core-i9 model with better graphics was tardy. This is gonna be my ride out the transition machine. When I rebooted into macOS it at first appeared to be fine too - but then I noticed the quirkiness and the failure to show down cleanly.

Nah, Windows seemed to install and work fine. If you have any external storage attached, BCA will not work. Typically, this fails, if you a WinRE (Windows Recovery) partition, which is added when Windows ends up in Recovery. When I couldn't cleanly reboot or shutdown macOS, that was the final straw. I think things sorta slowed down and Disk Utility would fail to initialize a few times. It would be good to know the exact steps that you took to encounter this. Please describe this 'quirkiness' in more detail.
